The Lumen concept inverts how a watch works in the dark. Instead of luminous hands and indices against a black dial — bright points in a dark field — the entire cream dial surface is coated in Super-LumiNova. The hands are skeletonized and painted black, becoming dark silhouettes against a glowing field. In daylight, cream dial and black hands provide clean contrast. In total darkness, the dial ignites and the hands cut dark shapes through the light. The coxswains of the DGzRS asked for maximum readability at night. Mühle's answer was to make the dial itself the light source.
